TheSocialGolfer.com – My Story…

Saturday, April 18th, 2015

We asked you the members to share your TSG (TheSocialGolfer.com) stories with us. Here it’s the turn of Richard Adinolfi to tell us about his TSG experience. Richard joined TSG in December 2013.

TheSocialGolfer.com – My Story by Richard Adinolfi

TheSocialGolfer.com means more to me than just playing golf. It started as therapy of sort and developed into an addiction.

In December 2013 I lost my father and I needed a release from the moment. I decided to throw myself into playing golf. Four hours of fresh air and a stroll in the countryside would take my mind of events.

The problem was I had nobody to play with.

My friends were spread far and wide over London and I had little interest in joining a club. My experiences of playing private clubs as a visitor were never good enough for me to part with hard earned cash.

I was a member of another golfing community website but could not find anyone to play with, until someone on that very site suggested The Social Golfer.

I took a look and saw frequent games being posted in the Essex area so I signed up.

Truth be told, I was not really expecting much but thought it was worth a shot (excuse the pun).

TheSocialGolfer.com – My Story (What happened next?)…

Hesitantly, I attended my first Epping Bandit game in January 2014 at Toot Hill Golf Club. I was immediately made to be feel welcome, despite having to sit across from Howard Davis at breakfast. Not a pleasant sight for anyone but one of which I have become accustomed.

The first few games I played were about getting to know the people I was playing alongside and enjoying playing golf on a regular basis. However, what was first a decision to get out and get fresh air and a bit of exercise quickly turned into a need to improve my game as much as possible. I signed up for as many games as I could at as many different courses as possible.

I had initially given myself a modest 24 handicap but wanted to bring this down as much as possible. Unfortunately an attitude, not shared by many but that is a discussion for another day!!!

Without The Social Golfer I would probably still be sitting at home watching golf on TV thinking “I wish I played more golf”, whereas now, I sit at home watching golf thinking “If I can just cut my handicap by a few more strokes, I’ll be as good as Tiger”….

The Social Golfer was there when I needed it. It is one of my first ports of call when I turn on the computer in the morning just hoping for those magic emails that say “a new game has been posted in your area”.

I sit here now in front of my computer having played 60 times in just over a year at 40 different courses. My handicap has come down from 24 to 16. I have travelled to France and Spain with the Epping Bandits, learnt some valuable Yiddish and have met many people whom I now consider friends.

I owe all of that to The Social Golfer!

TheSocialGolfer.com (TSG), the online social networking community for golfers celebrates its fourth year in existence, by launching its first ‘Above the line’ marketing campaign.

The website run by ex-Media Director Ian Mullins will be running a series of 10 second commercials throughout July and August using the world’s biggest Sports Radio station – talkSPORT.

The commercials written and produced by Mullins’ own marketing consultancy MC2 Marketing, launches on the station the same day as The OPEN commences.

TheSocialGolfer.com airtime will run for approximately seven weeks and plays on the theme of ‘being let down by your mates’.

The campaign has been planned to target an ABC1 35+ male audience and will reach over 3/4 million individuals with each listener hearing the campaign approximately 6 times.

TheSocialGolfer.com grows up …

Talking about the campaign Mullins said “It was always our intention to eventually launch the TSG brand to the masses but we have deliberately waited until such time as the website was a busy and much used resource before tempting a wider audience to try our service. In 2013 the site hosted over 700 golf events and had more than 4,500 rounds played. However, we recently hit the 8k+ users and feel now is the time to grow the community further”.

Mullins has worked across a number of blue chip brands in his career including managing the Emirates Airlines media activity for 7 years, Hitachi for 7 years and launched the Daily Star Sunday for the infamous Richard Desmond in his 11 years at the UK’s largest Media Independent MediaCom.

More recently he was responsible for managing The London Golf Show marketing activity including the launch of the Manchester Golf Show in 2013. He was also responsible for launch of the ‘Altonwood Season Ticket’ for the late Ron Noades’ Altonwood Group in the same year. He has also advised William Hunt of Trilby Tour fame on sponsorship matters.

He went on to say “When I first started planning and buying media on behalf of clients twenty years ago, I never thought for one second I would ever be spending my own money, on my own brand in mainstream media but here we are and I feel very excited. I am immensely proud of the unique service we have created for golfers and our ambition is to eventually be the biggest golf club in the UK … we’re certainly on our way!”

TheSocialGolfer.com is a unique platform …

The radio campaign has been bought via Radio Experts, the UK’s second biggest radio buying point and by an old media friend of Mullins’ Radio Experts MD – Steve Ramsay. “I was so excited for Ian when he called and told us it was time to go public with his creation. We started out trading radio together in the early 90’s, so it was a real thrill to plan a campaign in an sector so close to both our hearts…. as a avid golfer myself, In my humble opinion, Ian’s creation is the future of the sport!”

Another old media pal of Mullins’ Adam Mills – talkSPORT Ad Director said “We are thrilled to be helping Ian launch his brand and we believe talkSPORT to be the perfect platform for TheSocialGolfer.com. We have established ourselves as the world leading Sports Radio Station and it’s important that we continue to support new up and coming sports brands as well as the more established ones. I wish Ian every success this new and useful social media platform.”

The day’s event continued into the early evening with a dinner and raffle and we are very grateful to Alan Haywood and Stephen Slater for their help on the day. Of course we must also thank Anna Guss and Clare Mistry for their wonderful donation of a day with them at Wentworth, this alone raised £200.

Ian Mullins, Managing Director of The Social Golfer said “The event is now well established and whilst it wasn’t intended, Bletchingley is fast becoming the Augusta of The Social Golfer OPEN. As always we were hugely impressed with the way the club supported the event. It is key that we do we can to raise the profile of disabled golfers and this is the TSGers doing their little bit for the cause. BALASA is very close to our hearts and they are an example to anyone with a disability to get out and play!”

Richard Saunders, Chairman of BALASA said “The Social Golfer members are incredibly generous not to mention good humoured. What they have done for us in raising our profile is fantastic and we are so grateful. With this kind of support we can continue to pursue our goal of making golf a Paralympic sport by 2024.  What a wonderful day and superb bunch of golfers – we thank The Social Golfer’s for their generosity!”

TSG Masters – The Winners Interview …

Tuesday, May 13th, 2014
The Social Golfers

TSGers as they await their tee off ..

The TSG Masters started with a warm welcome from Ian & The TSG Team, which included a no. of freebies including ball markers, discount vouchers and a FREE lesson for all who attended. The venue,

The venue, Warley Park GC, was fantastic, the course in great condition, the weather at its best providing us with the most superb views of the surrounding Essex countryside.

The TSG Masters  – How they qualified?

Many players qualified from the monthly leaderboard with the remaining spaces snapped up via the ballot. All 40 places were taken up, with no one wishing to miss out on the first TSG ‘Major’ of the year.

This made for an exciting competition and while some TSGers were familiar with the new course layout, most were totally alien to it. We played the Childerditch and the Warley ‘1 to 9’ loop, two very different layouts offering their own challenges, the latter including some superb water features.

The TSG Masters  – The Winners…

Our inaugural winner, Matt Taylor (Kent) scored a fantastic 38 Pts off his 12 h’cap with Andy Flynn 2nd (Essex – 37 Pts) and 3rd Damian Benstead (Sussex – 34 Pts).

We also competed for 2 x Nearest Pins and a ‘Straightest Drive’. Winners on the day included popular TSGers, Dave Allchorne, Judy Lilley, Andy Attard with Ben Fykin taking the Par 3 trophy.

However, we’ll leave the final words to our new TSG Masters Champion…

The venue was a great choice and I’m sure everyone would agree a real challenge, those greens were fast! The views all around the course are worth the visit alone and I’m very much looking forward to returning with the very generous TSG four ball prize. All the little TSG touches made it feel really special on the day right from the welcome banner outside to the free gifts. My playing partners on the day were a pleasure to play with and it was great to meet all the new (to me) and old TSG faces after the round…. TSG epitomises the spirit of the game of golf and it’s great to know that whenever I play with someone new through the site, they’ll be like minded and great company. I must thank you all so much for making it the golfing day of my life and I can’t wait to see everyone again for the next TSG event at Bletchingley!“.
